  • replacing fuel pump

can a person use any golf cart fuel pump or do you have to replace the old one with the exact same model. I need one for an older g1 and a new one of the style on my cart is more costly than other models. If I mount the pump some where else does the pump model matter.

Yes, you can generally use most vacuum fuel pumps as long as long as it matches the basic function. The main difference between pumps are usually the shape of the mounting brackets and the mounting location. They all work by utilizing pulses from the crankcase to create a vacuum that draws fuel into the carburetor at a low pressure, typically around 4 PSI.

If you decide to go with a different one, just make sure the pump you choose can be properly mounted in a location where it can still receive the crankcase pulses and at the same height as the old one. The key is allowing the pump to maintain that steady low pressure fuel delivery to the carburetor. Problems arise when people try to avoid the vacuum pump and install an electric fuel pump instead. Most electric fuel pumps operate at much higher pressure which can overwhelm the carburetor and cause flooding.
