The clanking noise may have several underlying causes. Firstly, let's address the possibility of belt related issues. If the driven pulley spins faster than the drive pulley, it can cause the belt to slap, resulting in the clanking noise you're hearing. Additionally, the differential contains multiple gears, and any problems with their bearings could also contribute to the noise. It's worth checking if the input shaft has been replaced, as this component often fails. Using adequate gear lube, preferably of high quality like GL-5 or synthetic, is key, as these gears depend on proper lubrication for smooth operation.
Moving on to specific checks, let's start with the axle nuts. Check that they're torqued to specification and that the collar between the hub and bearing remains stationary. Axle bearing play or noise, particularly on the passenger side, warrants thorough investigation, as bearing failure could lead to significant issues. Next, let's inspect the rear clutch. Any excessive side-to-side or up-and-down movement along the input shaft could signal worn input shaft bearings, potentially contributing to the noise. Finally, examine the engine mounts. Loose or improperly secured mounts could allow the engine to rattle around, contributing to the noise. If you have any specific questions feel free to ask!
