  • Bench test igniter and lighting coil procedure

    Does anyone know the proper way to bench test the igniter and lighting coil on a Yamaha G1 while the engine is on the bench? Clutch is off for seal replacement, flywheel and stator is real dirty. Just want to make sure all works before reassembly. Have never heard it run but all signs point to the crank seals, mainly the leak at the PTO/clutch side.

    The ignition system on Yamaha G1 carts relies on two main components: the charge coil and the pulsar coil. These coils work together to generate the spark necessary for engine ignition. The charge coil produces a high voltage charge, while the pulsar coil sends a signal to the CDI unit to trigger the spark at the correct timing. If any part of this system malfunctions, it can lead to a loss of spark and engine performance issues. While the CDI control unit can't be directly tested, it can be diagnosed by replacing it with a known good unit or testing all its inputs thoroughly. Before diving into CDI troubleshooting, check the ohms readings at the wire harness connections, especially those coming out of the engine. Here is a post that goes into greater detail.       Regarding bench testing the ignition system while the engine is on the bench, make sure you've got a solid ground going. Start by removing the spark plug to alleviate compression resistance. This helps so that the engine can rotate freely without the added resistance of compression. Next, equip your impact wrench or drill with a socket that fits the center nut on the flywheel securely. Set the impact wrench to a spinning mode, avoiding the hammer action to prevent tightening or loosening of the flywheel nut. Use the drill or impact wrench to spin the motor fast enough while observing for spark at the spark plug gap. This method allows for a quick and efficient spark test with the engine on the bench without the need for starter/generator rotation.
