  • 1999-2000 ezgo txt twin robin ignitor issue

Okay I’ve been here once but here’s a little background. Parents got a golf cart and used it for years with no issue. They decided they wanted a lift kit, big tires/rims, paint job, fender flares, rear helper springs, back seat, and lights. They ordered everything from buggies unlimited and I installed it other than doing the paint. Ran great for the summer and then they parked it in the shack pole barn. Following spring no spark. Okay diagnostic time, ran some tests with some basic rule of thumb knowledge as I’m not specifically into fixing golf carts but more into atvs and such. Replaced the pulse coil, and the ignition coil, nothing, circled back after realizing I got ahead of myself and there was very little voltage to the ignition coil. Okay now a cheap eBay ignitor….. nothing and even less voltage. Decided on going with a new voltage regulator and a red hawk parts ignitor, bam back in business. Awesome. Ran a summer, same thing again. They decided to take it to a dealer, and they put in another ignitor. Toast at the end of the summer. I put in one more and disconnected the lights thinking maybe something is getting overworked. Tested that theory and by the end of the summer you never knew if it’d take off or not. So here’s what we have. New solenoid, new pulse coil, they put the old ignition coil back on and lost the new one, new voltage regulator, and at some point I was told they rebuilt the starter generator for whatever reason. I’m supposed to go through this entire thing and be done by the time they want to use it mid to late spring here in Minnesota. My question is what am I missing here? Other than a tech manual that hopefully has ohm and voltage specs to go off of. I’m pretty sure a another voltage regulator is needed, and obviously another ignitor, maybe even a ignition coil if I have to since it’s also got an annoying exhaust backfire when letting off the throttle (cam/valve clearance in spec, new carb, muffler and gasket as of last year that seemed to quiet it down a bit instead of sounding like a firecracker from a quarter mile off). My thoughts are that there has to be a good reputable brand for parts that I can replace the regulator, igniter, and maybe ignition coil with and perhaps even some new wires to and from along the way but I could be off base still. I just don’t want them to have to worry about having the same issues for what should be 8-10 years to come with maybe a battery or 2 depending on how they take care of it. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
