I have a 2010 EZ-GO RXV the starter quit working. I pulled it, cleaned it out, I have checked voltage across solenoid and at the starter all read above 12v. Does anyone know how to tell if the brushes are bad or too short?

The 2010 and newer RXV had a updated style starter/generator that was slightly different than the unit ezgo has been using since 1991. These carts can sometimes get to a point where you have to press the gas pedal multiple times, up to 6-8 times, in fact, before it finally starts. This often points to a problem with the brushes in the starter.
To check if the brushes are bad or too short, try pulling the rubber caps on the brush holders. In one case, you might find the brush even with the holder, indicating it's still in decent shape. However, if you pull the next cap and find the brush way down inside the holder, that's a clear sign the brush is worn out and too short to make proper contact.
For replacement, you can get a new brush set for the Advanced Starter Generator 114-01-4010, which costs about $50. However, a more budget friendly option is to take an old brush to an alternator/starter repair shop. They can usually match it up to something similar for less than $20.
