In setups like these, a solid ground is key for the starter to draw the full amount of power needed to turn the engine over effectively, especially under the increased load of a compression stroke with the spark plug in. Even if everything seems grounded, if there’s even a slight bit of corrosion or a loose connection at the ground points, it can cause a high resistance path that limits the voltage reaching the starter leading to weak or inconsistent cranking.
To really rule this out, start by finding the main ground connections, especially where the battery negative cable meets the frame and where the engine itself is grounded to the chassis. Disconnect these ground points and give them a solid cleaning, sand them down to bright, bare metal if possible, and make sure the contact surfaces are as clean and tight as can be. Reconnect everything securely, and don’t forget to check the ground cable itself for any internal corrosion or breaks that may be hiding under the insulation.
Once you’ve done that, try turning it over again. A solid ground path can make a world of difference by allowing the starter to draw full power from the battery and engage strongly under compression. This way, you’ll be sure the ground isn’t the hidden culprit here, and if the issue persists, we’ll know it’s time to dig into other possible causes.
