Ratchet sound from rear end

When I let off the accelerator I get sort of a ratchet sound from the rear end. Like gears that are supposed to be throwing away from each other, are rubbing toghether. When I hit the accelerator again, sometimes I get a brief rough gear engagement sound, then all is well untill I let off, and get the ratchet sound again...

Where should I start?

Did you ever remedy this problem. My 2006 EZGO TXT is doing the same thing and i am looking for suggestions.
