  • 1988 Marathon Speed

Just picked up one of these. I put new batteries in it and everything works, but it doesn't go very fast. Is there a way to adjust the speed? Maybe something needs cleaning? This cart was idle for a long time....

You could be reaching speeds of 9mph to 12mph currently which is pretty normal for its intended use. Golf carts were made to safely carry two golfers and their bags around a golf course, so this speed was considered sufficient. However, if you want to make it go faster, there are a few things you can do, though each has its own limitations because of the way the motor is wound.

One option is to increase the voltage. This is one of the most effective ways to boost your cart's speed. For your EZGO, you could add an extra 6 volt battery to bump the total voltage up to 42 volts. This will give you a noticeable increase in speed. But remember, you’ll either need to charge this extra battery separately or get a 42 volt charger to handle the whole pack. The rest of the system should be robust enough to handle the slight increase in voltage.

Another method is to install larger tires on the rear. Bigger tires will cover more ground with each rotation, effectively increasing your speed. This is a straightforward change, but it can affect the cart's stability and handling, so you’ll need to make sure it's a safe and practical option for your use.

More expensive, but you could also change the gearing. Adjusting the gear ratio can give you higher top speeds, but it’s a more involved process. This typically requires advanced mechanical knowledge.
