  • Pls help regarding steering wheel change

Hi. I have an ezgo electric that I just changed the steering wheel to an RHOX aviator. The problem is the Allen bolts that secure the wheel to the adapter were super soft metal and stripped easily and no longer can be used. Is there anyone here that knows the size of the Allen bolts needed to replace the stripped ones ?
    thanks in advance !!

If you still have the stripped bolts, you can use them as a reference. Even though they're stripped, you can measure the diameter of the bolt shank with a caliper or a ruler. You’ll want to measure the part of the bolt that goes through the hole, not the head. This will give you the diameter, which is one part of the bolt size.

Next, you’ll need to determine the thread pitch. If you have a thread pitch gauge, that’s the best tool for the job. If not, you can take the bolt to a hardware store and compare it with bolts of known sizes. Many stores have bolt sizing displays where you can screw your bolt into a template to find a match.

For the length, measure the length of the bolt from the underside of the head to the end of the bolt. This will give you the correct length you need.

If you don’t have the old bolts at all, you can measure the holes in the steering wheel adapter. Use a caliper or a ruler to measure the diameter of the holes. This should give you a good idea of the bolt diameter you need. To figure out the thread pitch, you might need to bring the adapter to a hardware store and test different bolts to see which one fits snugly and threads in smoothly.

If you're having trouble measuring the hole directly, you can create a template to make the process easier. Start by placing a piece of sturdy paper or thin cardboard over the hole in the steering wheel adapter. Press down firmly to create an impression of the hole's edges, or use a pencil to trace the circumference of the hole onto the paper. This template can now be used to measure the diameter accurately with a ruler or caliper.

Lastly, for Allen bolts, the key size is usually standard and corresponds to the bolt size, but make sure you have a matching Allen wrench to test for a proper fit when you find the bolts you need.

Once you have these measurements you'll be able to buy replacement bolts, preferably ones made from a harder material to avoid stripping in the future. Stainless steel or high grade bolts are a good choice for durability.

Thanks !! I do have the old bolts… I will take them to Lowe’s and see if they can match them up. I didn’t think this was an option becuase I figured they used a unique size etc. after reading your post…maybe they are a standard.
thanks for taking the time to help !!
