I have a 1989 EZGO 36 volt cart that I bought cheap. I've used it occassionally for 2 years or so and a few months ago I smelled burning plastic as I was driving it and smoke was coming out near the passenger side rear tire. I found that the brake cable had heated up and melted the plastic sheathing that covers it. I replaced the cable with a new one, $40!!!!, and a month later the same thing happened. Somehow the cable is shorting out and melting the cover. I noticed the supports for the cable were insulated . Any advice about how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

It's a brake cable of there should be no power to it. Do you have pictures if there is a short there should be more damage. Follow the cable and see if anything is shorting out close to it. I have an 88 marathon and Mr tires are too wide and my brake cable housing melted from rubbing the tire could it be that.
