no forward or reverse on my 36 volt txt

i have problems with my forward and reverse, sometimes it will work and sometimes it wont. i can hear solenoid clicking but wont go. i was told it could be wiring on my batteries are bad due to i just changed out one terminal on end of one of the cables. after i did that it worked but forward/reverse switch got very hot and was smoking a little. solenoid still would click when i tried to perform forward or reverse action just cart wouldnt move.
