When I am backing out of my drive, slowly and sometimes feathering the throttle, the cart will violently go into forward. When I remove my foot from throttle it stops and I then can back up again. The lever is in reverse and does not move. Where do I start looking for the issue? For the record: I bought the cart used and it may be made up of several different cart's parts, something I learned about the dealer after the purchase. I have no idea of the age of any of the components. Sorry for my ignorance--first cart.

Providing the specifics about your golf cart model is needed to diagnosing the problem because different models and years have different components, wiring setups, and control systems. For example, older carts may have a simple mechanical forward/reverse switch, while newer models might use electronic controllers that manage the direction and speed of the cart. The way these components interact can vary significantly, so identifying your specific setup is key.
To start, it would be helpful if you could post some pictures of your cart's setup, particularly around the forward/reverse switch, controller, and motor areas. I’m also attaching a guide that can help you identify the type of setup you have, which will allow us to give you more accurate advice. This guide will walk you through identifying different types of switches, controllers, and wiring configurations commonly found. For instance, if you have a mechanical forward/reverse switch, there could be an issue with the contacts inside the switch causing it to momentarily lose contact with the reverse position and jump into forward. Alternatively, if your cart uses an electronic controller, the problem could be related to the controller itself, possibly receiving incorrect signals or having a wiring issue.
In broad terms, several components could potentially cause the issue you're experiencing. Another possibility is the throttle sensor or potentiometer if equipped, which could be sending mixed signals to the controller, causing it to momentarily engage forward gear. The controller itself could also be the issue if it’s faulty or has a wiring problem, leading to incorrect directional control.
Given that your cart might have parts from different models, there’s also the chance that some components aren’t fully compatible with each other, leading to unpredictable behavior like you’re describing. This could include mismatched wiring or incompatible controllers and motors. Posting pictures will help us narrow down the possible causes.
Feel free to ask any questions as you go through the guide. The more information we have, the better we can assist you in pinpointing the exact issue.
