Your carts potentiometer is originally designed to reduce the speed when the cart is in reverse. This is a safety feature to ensure the cart moves more slowly when backing up. It has two wires that connect to a reverse micro switch (MS). When these wires are connected to each other by the reverse MS, the potentiometer signal output is reduced by 50%. This means that when you engage reverse, the cart's speed is intentionally cut in half to prevent it from going too fast.
If these wires are connected to the wrong terminals on the reverse MS, you could inadvertently get reduced speed in forward instead of reverse. This might be what's happening in your case. But if that all seems too confusing, here's a straightforward approach to fix this issue without changing the existing wiring setup. You can simply swap the S1 and S2 cables on the motor. Here's what this does and how it fixes the problem.
By swapping the S1 and S2 cables on the motor, you effectively reverse the motor's polarity. This means the direction that the motor considers 'forward' and 'reverse' is flipped. After swapping the cables, what was previously forward will now be reverse and vice versa. Given the potentiometer's speed reduction feature is wired correctly but the cart is reacting as if it’s reversed, this swap will align the speed reduction correctly. Forward will now have full speed, and reverse will be reduced by 50% as intended.
If you’re still experiencing issues after this swap, it might be worth revisiting the wiring of the reverse MS to check if it’s correctly configured. However, swapping the S1 and S2 cables is a quick fix for the symptom you're describing.
