ezgo will not stop when in gear

my electic ezgo Textron will not stop moving when I take my foot of the pedal and it appears that the pedal is going back to where it is supposed to be but when I put it in gear it starts going. the wire that comes of the rheostat of the pedal has been extremely hot and almost burnt into. when I put the lever in gear it starts to move. any ideas what my problem is???

I would start with re-wiring the rheostat and any other bad wiring you see. It could very well be you are getting a direct short, (which, in a sense, is what the rheostat does). In fact a cart that old could probably stand a complete re-wire. Cables and all.

I have one doing that exact thing and I'll try the rewire and let you know my end result, if you figure out something different could you please let me know
