I just purchased a 1999 Club Car Carryall and the throttle response doesn't ramp up properly. It goes from slow to fast without much in between.. Any ideas. I have had a gas EZGO for 20 years but this is my first Club Car.

It could be as simple as adjusting the throttle cables. Various throttle cables wind their way through the engine compartment and connect to the carburetor allowing for control over the engine speed. Loosen these lock nuts so you can adjust the cable tension. Carefully pull the cable to remove any slack so that there is a slight amount of free play when the accelerator pedal is not being pressed so that the throttle plate in the carburetor is fully closed at idle. Once the slack is removed and the tension feels right, tighten the lock nuts to secure the cable in place. The throttle should now respond more smoothly transitioning from slow to fast without abrupt changes.
Alternatively, the issue could originate from the engine's fuel intake system. With today's ethanol levels in fuel, deposits can start accumulating in the carburetor in as little as six months. Ethanol blended fuels are hygroscopic, meaning they absorb moisture from the air. This moisture can lead to the formation of varnish, gum, and other deposits within the fuel system, particularly in the carburetor. These deposits clog the tiny passages and jets within the carburetor, restricting fuel flow and disrupting the proper air-fuel mixture needed for smooth engine operation. When the air-fuel mixture is compromised, it can cause poor throttle response among other performance issues.
Uploading a YouTube video showing how the engine runs can be very helpful in diagnosing the problem more accurately. A visual and auditory examination of the engine's performance can provide valuable clues about what might be going wrong. If possible, record a video of the engine while demonstrating the throttle response issue and share it with us for further insights.Updated by Michael Eddie; June 4, 2024, 10:07 AM.
