The handle to shift from Fwd to Rev shifts very hard

It just started - I there a way to grease the cable? Or am I chasing my tail

Make sure it IS the cable,, take it loose from the rear lever and see if that changes anything.
I have taken cables out and cleaned them and lubed them, but a new one is always a winner.

Make sure that the connection is at the right adjustment on the transmission. The cable is probably in a position that it is kinked somewhere or on a very sharp curve. Try to map out a position that is the straightest from the shifter linkage to the trans. You can put some grease on it but only at the ends, where the trans hooks up and where the shifter begins. Use something like white lithium grease or something that wont gum up over time.
