  • Breathing new LiFe(PO4) into a 2019 Tempo

Hi folks! I just purchased my first Golf Cart this past Saturday (and it's been raining since). According to the Serial Number Decoder, it's a "2019 Tempo Connect Electric ERIC 2 Non-lifted".

I've been doing a lot of reading and hopefully I'm just over-thinking this. I already have a 48v 100Ah LiFePO4 battery and charger on order.

I've read through the "How to convert Club Car from lead acid to Lithium batteries" post several times. My biggest question is about this paragraph:

For post 2014 Club Car models without an On Board Computer (OBC) such as those with ERIC PowerWise chargers, you can potentially continue using your existing charger by updating it with a lithium algorithm if available. This update allows the charger to properly charge lithium batteries adjusting its cycle to match their specific requirements.
If I understand that correctly, my 2019 Tempo (post-2014) does NOT have an OBC??? ...and I have no need to bypass anything, or install jumpers, or anything else??? Just drop in the LiFePO4 and go???

I will install the charger that's coming with the battery on-board, but I may also upload the proper LiFePO4 charge profile into the existing (delta-q?) charger and use it instead (or as a spare).

Or, am I completely off base on this?

The ERIC charger itself is programmable and uses CAN based communication, so yes, if you’re comfortable uploading a proper lithium charge profile to it (assuming it’s a Delta-Q and you’ve got access to the software and cables or a dealership), you can potentially continue using it, though most folks still go with the dedicated lithium charger that comes with their new battery for simplicity. That said, you’re not off base at all. Your 2019 Tempo does not have the older style OBC that was used in pre 2014 Club Cars, so you won’t need to worry about bypassing anything like you would with an OBC style system.

Thanks. I ultimately just cracked it open and didn't see an OBC, so it was full steam ahead from there.

I considered reprogramming the Delta-Q, but the charger that came with my LiFePO4 battery was smaller and lighter, and I had plenty of room to mount it onboard. Bonus that now I only have to find an extension cord (and not both a cord and the charging unit).
