  • Can you really recondition 8V batteries?

Reading how you can recondition deep cycle 8V batteries but has anyone had any experience doing so? Anyone know how well they perform if you 'recondition' spent batteries? Mine were on a trickle charger but it seems to have failed to function over the summer. Looking at significant replacement cost and wondering if anyone has heard of reconditioning really working for golf cart batteries.

    Thanks,

Typically, reconditioning involves trying to restore the battery's capacity by addressing sulfation, a common issue in depleted lead-acid batteries. Methods might include desulfation devices, charging cycles, or even chemical additives. However, for deep cycle batteries, the process can be more challenging due to their construction and usage patterns.

Deep cycle batteries often endure extensive discharge and recharge cycles, leading to sulfation that might be harder to address through reconditioning methods alone. Moreover, attempting to unseal batteries to clean plates or replace acid involves significant risks, including leaks, exposure to hazardous materials, and compromising the integrity of the battery casing.

While some enthusiasts might share experiences of successful reconditioning, the effectiveness can vary widely based on the battery's age, condition, and the methods used. There's no standardized or foolproof approach, and it often requires expertise, precise handling of chemicals, and sometimes specialized equipment.

Considering the potential risks and uncertainties involved, some individuals opt for professional services specializing in battery reconditioning. These services might offer safer and more controlled environments for reconditioning while minimizing the risks of leaks or damage.
