  • Smell while charging

My friend has a club car 8v . He recently purchased new batteries and had someone with electrical experience, but not with a golf car. He is experiencing a strong odor while charging. Any thoughts on why this is happening? Could it be a bad battery cell or defective wiring? Thanks for your help. Were a distance from certified golf cart repair people.

It's pretty common to notice a strong odor during the first few charge cycles after installing new flooded lead acid batteries. What you’re smelling is likely the result of the batteries "gassing," where hydrogen and oxygen are being released as part of the chemical reaction during charging. This is a normal part of the break in process for new batteries but be sure to always charge them in a well ventilated area to avoid any buildup of gases.

That said, while this odor is normal initially it’s important to keep an eye on it. If the smell persists or becomes stronger over time it could indicate a potential problem. If a battery is overcharging it can cause excessive gassing and potentially damage the cells. Overcharging can be due to a malfunctioning charger or charge settings or incorrect wiring. Another potential concern could be a defective battery cell, if one cell or battery is faulty it might overheat or charge improperly leading to stronger odors or even leaks.

If the smell persists or the batteries feel excessively hot during charging it’s worth taking a closer look at the setup. To be safe, I’d recommend checking the water levels in the batteries as well.
