  • 1982 Club Car Steering problem

Can I use a 1984 rack in replacement of my existing steering gear box. My steering a gone and nobody sells replacement gear box's for a 1982 club car. does anybody know of a modification I can use to fix my steering?

The 1982 club car steering box, known as a Ross box, is indeed obsolete, but it's a simple unit to repair. There is an adjustment screw on the top of the box with a lock nut that you must loosen. Once loosened, you can tighten the screw while having someone slowly turn the steering wheel back and forth in the sloppy part. This allows for proper adjustment without over tightening.

You must first loosen the lock nut. Once loosened, you can adjust the screw by tightening it. Again, it's beneficial to have someone turn the steering wheel slowly back and forth within the play area while you make this adjustment. This verifies that you tighten the screw just enough to eliminate the slop without over tightening which can lead to other issues.

The steering column itself is connected to a worm gear and the pin you've just adjusted rides within the pitch of this gear to move the steering arm back and forth. There is a bearing located at the bottom of this shaft, and while it's less likely, a bad bearing can contribute to the movement issues you're describing. However, it sounds more like a loose bolt on the housing that's supposed to secure the entire assembly to the cart might be the culprit. Inside the Ross box, you'll find a spiral worm gear that the pin rides on. If this pin is worn out, replacements can be ordered.

If you're considering an upgrade to a newer rack and pinion steering system typically found in club car 1984 and newer, it's viable. It's generally straightforward, typically requiring you to drill just one additional hole. You can source the parts needed from a donor cart, swap out the entire front suspension and steering column. This not only modernizes your steering system but also provides more precise handling and reduce future maintenance concerns.

I have a club car DS pre 1984 model, it had the worm gear steering and took that out and replaced with a steering rack retro kit. All went well but the steering in the front is still loose as a goose. Does any one know where i can find all the replacement bushings and tie rod ends for the pre 1984 front end? will post pics of the setup soon

May need to pull it apart and match it up to something at napa or autozone, they do appear to be a different length looking at these attached diagrams
