  • Steering column modification

Looking for information on shortening a steering column. Has anybody done this mod?

It's been done but it does involve cutting and welding.
Entering and exiting the cart gets tougher with a shorter column.

I would cut the shaft of the steering and weld it back to the length you need.
If you never have taken one a part there isn't much to them. The outer tube is just to hold it in place. You have a bearing up top and one in the bottom of the tube.
Really not a lot to it.

What cart are we talking about. I may can do a picture tural of it if enough people want it.

Haven't found anything yet. Thinking 3" - 4". Also, I would like to know how the column is affixed to the box. Cutting and welding the shaft is the easy part.

The Ezgo's I have seen are bolted to the steering box are the ram. The three bolts that you see looking down the tube. Dang when I installed the steering on the Monster cart I had it all pulled a part to swap it out. I wished I done the pictures!

The steering wheel really gets in the way when doing this, like stated above trying to get in and out. You will no longer be able to "slide" under the wheel. Just my .02

To shorten your column you will need to cut 2 pieces, the column and the shaft.
                    Measure twice, cut once....
Here is a breakdown of your steering assembly.

                      Thanks Doug,

Looks like the column is pressed into the steering box.

I no longer have my G-14 so I can't look to see for sure but my guess is that you would have to cut the column with it still attached to the steering box.

Yup, I agree. That means taking everything apart to cut the shaft. Guess I'll probably leave it as is.

That is probably your best bet
